GA: Sex offender registration law upgraded to felony.
July 2, 2002
As of Monday, any convicted sex offender who
does not meet the registration requirements will
be guilty of a felony.
The change -- previously failure to comply was a misdemeanor --
increases the penalty to one to three years in prison.
A statement released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said change
was needed because about one-third of all registered sex offenders have
moved and not informed the local sheriff of their new address.
More than 125 sex offenders are registered in Chatham County,
according to the GBI's online sex offender registry.
