MA: Lowell City Council wants to show sex offenders on TV.

By MICHAEL LAFLEUR, Sun Staff LOWELL In response to recent incidents involving convicted sex offenders with ties to Lowell, city councilors last night voted to begin broadcasting the names and pictures of such individuals on the city's municipal cable channel.

Councilor Rodney Elliott, who made the motion prompting last night's vote, has been pushing for the measure since November. He introduced the idea just days before a 45-year-old Tewksbury man with a record of sex offenses was caught allegedly trying to sneak into the Moody Elementary School.

Last night, Elliott said the director of the Lowell Telecommunications Corporation, the city's municipal cable network, has been resisting the broadcasts out of concern about liability issues and his staff's safety.
