Parents wanting to go on field trips with their children, read in their classrooms or join the PTO first have to submit to criminal background checks in most Johnson County schools.

By typing in personal information on a state Web site, school administrators can know in minutes whether a would-be volunteer has a criminal history.

School officials say they’re looking mostly for abuse or molestation histories when they check the thousands of volunteers who work in the county’s schools.
